English as a Second Language

Program Description

English as a Second Language (ESL) is offered at Avon Grove School District at each level.  The ESL curriculum is based on the TESOL Standards for Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing and the PA Academic Standards for Reading and Writing.  The program is designed to provide English Language Learners (ELLs) with direct instruction in oral language development, reading/decoding, reading comprehension, writing mechanics, expository writing, listening comprehension, and background knowledge building through grade-level appropriate content units.  The program includes computer-based instruction geared towards ELLs.  The goal is for students to become proficient in the four skill areas:  Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.

Enrollment in the program is determined by an English language proficiency test administered to the appropriate students according to their Home Language Survey.  Students exit the program upon meeting the state criteria for exit/monitor.
